Cycling gloves are tricky. Too much padding often creates pressure points and causes numbness. Too little padding often does not protect pressure points and causes numbness. When I found my first pair that worked, I kept them way past the point of raggedness. I then cursed myself for not buying multiple pairs sooner when I went to re-buy and they no longer existed. I then had weeks of trying out alternatives, some with price-tags that still make my pupils widen.

NOTE: If anyone reading this has a big issue with hand-numbness on rides – please check your bike fit, particularly saddle and handlebar tilt. It is often a sign that you have too much weight leaning forward.

As such, when we decided to develop gloves, I began with padding. I found SBR pads, an especially dense gel pad that absorbed vibrations and would adjust naturally in different grip strengths or hand positions. It sat thin and did not interfere with feel on the bike. We positioned the pads and attached some lightweight, highly breathable material on the back. We went with a modern pull-on design but added pull tags to two fingers and the bottom of the palm to aid taking off.
